THE BUCHANAN BUST | 2008-03-17
Someone on SF said it was too bad Buchanan wasn't running because he might have made it this time.
I'm afraid not.
What really killed the Buchanan candidacy was his coming over as a religious nut. That and the Republican Establishment's Slavish South Carolina, where I'm from.
SC tripped him up, but the religious nuttiness did him in.
The media of course insist that the problem was his "extremism," but he went to the top in New Hampshire with all of those "extremist" opinions, including open criticism of the Jewish Lobby. It was when he got onto anti-abortion and anti-evolution AS MAIN ISSUES -- everybody already knew his stance on them -- which his polls REALLY slid.
Another example of this was Buchanan ads objecting to a gay rights parade backed by the government. The actual pictures were so sickeningly lewd that Bay decided to run pictures of a DIFFERENT gay rights parade that was more family-friendly.
Campaign ads were exempt from censorship, so she could have run the real thing, answering objections with the fact that the government APPROVED this behavior and Buchanan intended to STOP that. Instead she decided to be a Good Little Catholic Girl and not expose the public to the reality their government was promoting.
Naturally the media portrayed her as so ignorant she didn't know WHICH parade she was talking about, and commented that it wasn't all that bad anyway.
Then Pat went on show after show saying he was not descended from a monkey, which is the true hick's and media portrayal of anti-evolution, and Buchanan's idea of a cutting edge issue, implying that ALL anti-evolutionists are indeed the hicks the media portray them as.
It is a mercy that the election date put an end to this. If it hadn't, Pat's only votes would have been him and Bay.
