People who talk about Roman discipline in detail would have lost a real Roman battle if they were in command back then.

Why? Because they are so obsessed with the formation and the short sword that they forget the javelin. Every Roman battle began with each soldier throwing his javelin at the beginning. This was absolutely essential in every battle.

That javelin throw was so routine that it is barely mentioned. It took seconds, and then they formed up for battle. I was very young then but I seem to remember every Roman soldier carried sixty to one hundred pounds of equipment along in the tens of thousands of miles of marching he did in his twenty-five years carreer. Every one of them carried his javelin all that way for the one throw. The javelin alone was as cumbersome and heavy as the short sword and shield he toted all that way.

For one throw at the beginning.

It is hard to explain battle, so it is hard toe explain why the initial javelin throw was so essential that they carried it all that way and always began the battle that way. But the fact that they DID it shows how essential it was.

This initial javelin throw was a sine qua non because the Roman strategy was based on dispersing the enemy in the way all those flying javelins did it. It gave them time to form up for a defense or a charge. The form of the enemy that came at them was determined by that mass of deadly spears in the air.

So, while AFKAN and others are making essential points about the fight itself, you will lose if you forget the initial javelin throw. Our indispensable, sine qua non javelin throw at the beginning of ANY battle is the Mantra***. Without it, the enemy forms up his own way and goes on the offensive. The Mantra must be the keystone of our attack, because it is a shock, and it puts the enemy on a PREDICTABLE defensive at the outset as all those flying spears did:

"How long would it take anyone to realize I'm not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?"

"And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn't object to this?"
