The famous and astute Rev. R.L. Dabney of the war between the states era is one to be read and digested. A reform leader and one held in the highest of standing by churches and people and leaders alike was almost defeated by the northern "christians" you describe.
After he was gone, the southern presbyteries seem to have been easily cowed and universalized with the utmost Hegelian style tactics... along with plain ol' armtwisiting and threatening tactics employed everywhere today against any sort of unPC dissent.
I'm sure there are many on this list who are more than a little familiar with Dabney. A stronghold of faith.
