Years ago I had a conversation with John Hume, who was the leader of the Irish nationalists in Northern Ireland. You may remember that he and the unionist leader won the nobel peace prize for the Irish 'peace process'. He was a very clever operator. I asked him how he knew that what he was saying was having an effect, and he said, "I repeat the same phrase over and over until I hear other people using it".
